Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

The English opening batter Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments made by skipper Stokes about the team environment not being "weak men".

The all-rounder made those words in several interviews in the wake of England's loss in the second match of the Ashes versus the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where England are staring at defeat with a match to spare, Stokes stated he had let his message to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I required," remarked Stokes.

But, following Crawley scored 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to his side were beaten in the second Test to fall 2-0 down.

The team subsequently took a break to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and third Tests.

Prior to this match, he said his team had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay alive in the series.

Yet, Crawley asserted the messaging from the captain and head coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," noted the opener. "It's just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

The Hosts On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket late on Saturday came during a decisive three-wicket burst by Australian spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side 207-6 chasing a daunting target of 435.

This means, the home team require just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to secure an unassailable three-nil advantage after three Tests.

Defeat will extend England's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes series loss.

This series will be completed in only 11 days of cricket – with England losing the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined more swiftly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," said the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," he continued.

"The challenge has been tough. Australia is a formidable team. It was inevitably tough coming here to face them. They were the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Place In Question

Although the opener's performance in Adelaide probably answers questions about his immediate future in the England team, Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 in England's second knock on Saturday, extending his modest returns versus Australia.

In 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and averages just 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and recorded a poorer average.

But, Crawley said any notion Pope is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added Crawley. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has played some really good knocks. It is talk from the outside. There is no discussion of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
